Frequently asked questions

What is Oväder?

Oväder is a weather app with a dark, cinematic look and a sense of humor. It shows current conditions, hourly detail, weekly forecasts, and optional home screen widgets — with an optional "profane mode" that replaces bland summaries with colorful commentary.

Why does the app need my location?

Location is used to show weather where you are. When you grant permission, the app reads your coordinates and fetches a local forecast. If you decline, you can still use the app with a default location or cities you add manually.

Optional travel updates use significant location changes (about every 500 m on iOS — not continuous GPS) if you enable widget travel updates and grant "Always" location access. Widgets refresh when you move roughly 5 km or more. You can use the app without that feature.

How do I add favorite cities?

Swipe horizontally between weather pages. At the end of your cities, tap the add card to search for a city and save it as a favorite. Swipe back to switch between your current location and saved cities.

How do I customize the hero metrics?

On the main weather screen, tap any of the four metric cards below the temperature (for example Feels, Wind, Humidity, or Precipitation). A picker opens where you can swap in other metrics such as UV index, air quality, sunrise, sunset, cloud cover, or pressure.

Your choices are saved on your device.

What is profane mode?

Profane mode replaces the standard weather headline with blunt, humorous commentary about the current conditions. It may include strong language. It is on by default.

To turn it off on iPhone or iPad, open the iOS Settings app, scroll down to Oväder, and toggle Profane Mode off.

How do widgets work?

On iOS, you can add Oväder widgets to your home screen or lock screen. Widgets show the current temperature, weather icon, location label, and headline text synced from the app.

Open the app occasionally to refresh widget data. Widgets also update on a background schedule and, if travel updates are enabled, when you move roughly 5 km or more to a new area.

What are widget travel updates?

This optional feature keeps widgets accurate while you travel. If you accept the prompt and grant "Always" location access, the app monitors significant location changes (about every 500 m on iOS, using cell and Wi‑Fi rather than continuous GPS) and refreshes the forecast for your new location when you move roughly 5 km or more.

You can decline the prompt when it appears. To turn travel updates off later, revoke "Always" location access for Oväder in your device Settings.

Is my data sold or used for ads?

No. Oväder does not include advertising, does not sell your personal information, and does not use third-party analytics trackers. Most preferences and favorites stay on your device. Coordinates are sent to public weather APIs to fetch forecasts.

Getting started

First time using Oväder? Here is the quick tour.

  1. Allow location access when prompted so the app can show weather where you are. You can change this later in Settings.
  2. Swipe left and right to move between your current location, favorite cities, and the add-city card.
  3. Swipe up on the main screen to open hourly and weekly forecast detail.
  4. Tap a hero metric card to choose which weather details appear in the row below the temperature.
  5. On iOS, long-press your home screen to add an Oväder widget. Open the app once so it can sync the latest forecast.

Widgets

Home screen and lock screen widgets are available on iOS. Add a widget from the iOS widget gallery, then open Oväder at least once to populate it with current weather.

Widget not updating?

Profane mode

Profane mode is an optional personality layer — not a separate account feature. When enabled, weather headlines use strong language and dry humor. When disabled, the app uses a cleaner tone while keeping the same forecast data and layout.

Parental note: Profane mode is enabled by default. Turn it off in iOS Settings > Oväder > Profane Mode if the language is not appropriate for your household.

Troubleshooting

Weather won't load

Wrong location or city name

Forecast looks inaccurate

Oväder uses official and open forecast sources (see below). All weather apps interpolate and round data differently, so small differences from other services are normal. If something looks clearly wrong for an extended period, email us with the location and time.

App crashes or behaves oddly

Weather data

Forecasts are fetched from trusted public weather services. Your coordinates are sent over encrypted connections to retrieve data for your location.

Oväder is an independent app and is not affiliated with SMHI, Open-Meteo, Apple, or Google.
